ADR Transport: when safety is essential

Not all goods can be transported in the same way.

Certain products, due to their characteristics, require specific handling, documentation, identification, and transport conditions. This is the case for goods classified as dangerous and subject to ADR regulations.

In these transports, experience and knowledge of the regulations are especially important.

What is ADR?

ADR is the international agreement regulating the transport of dangerous goods by road.

The regulation establishes the conditions under which these goods can be transported, as well as requirements related to vehicles, documentation, load identification, training, and the obligations of the various participants in the transport.

The agreement is updated periodically. The current version, ADR 2025, incorporates modifications applicable from January 1, 2025.

Which goods may be subject to ADR?

The regulation covers different classes of dangerous goods according to the nature of the risk.

Among many other products, certain gases, flammable liquids, toxic substances, corrosives, or other chemicals may be included.

This does not mean that all products of a certain family are necessarily ADR. The specific classification of each good determines the applicable requirements.

Why does it need specific management?

In conventional transport, it is already essential to protect the goods and meet deadlines. In ADR, an additional responsibility linked directly to safety is added.

The regulation establishes technical requirements and common procedures with the aim of increasing the safety of international transport of dangerous goods by road.

For this reason, it is important to work with companies that know this type of operation and can identify the specific transport needs before executing it.

Experience in ADR transport

Agencia Nord’s specialization in this field goes back a long way. In 1986 the company specialized in the distribution of ADR dangerous goods and became a pioneer of this type of transport in Catalonia.

International road transport: what to consider before sending goods to Europe

Europe is a highly connected market and road transport is one of the main tools that allow companies to move goods between countries.

In 2025, international transport accounted for approximately one quarter of European road freight activity, while Spain ranked as the third EU country by volume of tonne-kilometers transported by vehicles registered in the country.

But organizing international transport involves more than calculating the kilometers between origin and destination.

Planning before departure

An international shipment starts long before the vehicle hits the road.

It is necessary to know correctly:

  • the origin and destination;
  • the volume and characteristics of the goods;
  • the required deadlines;
  • the type of transport needed;
  • the specific requirements the load may have.

Having this information allows studying the route and choosing among options such as full load, groupage, or parcel.

Europe is not a single transport scenario

Although there is a common framework within the European Union, operations may vary when a shipment enters or leaves certain markets.

The European Commission reminds, for example, that transport between the EU and third countries is often subject to specific agreements. There are differentiated frameworks for Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, as well as for the United Kingdom after Brexit.

This makes it especially important to know the destination well and properly prepare each shipment.

The importance of communication

When goods travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers, information is almost as important as the physical movement itself.

Knowing that transport is coordinated, having a contact person, and being able to act in case of an incident reduces complexity for the company contracting the service.

This factor is especially relevant for companies that regularly work with international suppliers or customers but do not want to allocate internal resources to coordinate every transport detail.

Connecting the company with its markets

Agencia Nord offers international transport with service to major European capitals, working with different modalities according to the needs of each shipment: full load (FTL), groupage (LTL), and parcel.

With over 70 years of experience in the transport sector, our goal is to simplify this process and offer each customer a response adapted to their goods, destination, and deadlines.

Because internationalizing a company also means being able to deliver its products where its customers are.

Full load or groupage: which transport option does your company need?

One of the most common decisions when organizing freight transport is determining whether to hire a full load (FTL) or opt for a groupage (LTL) service.

There is no single answer. The choice will mainly depend on the volume of goods, destination, deadlines, and specific needs of each shipment.

Understanding the difference allows choosing a more suitable solution for each shipment.

What is a full load or FTL?

FTL stands for Full Truck Load. In this type of service, the vehicle is dedicated to a single shipment or customer.

It is an especially suitable option when there is enough volume to justify using a full vehicle or when the characteristics of the goods or service make it convenient to have dedicated transport.

Factors that may lead a company to choose a full load include:

  • a high volume of goods;
  • the need for a more direct operation between origin and destination;
  • specific loading or unloading requirements;
  • shipments that require particular planning.

What is groupage or LTL?

LTL means Less Than Truck Load. In this case, different shipments share capacity within the same transport.

Groupage is especially interesting when a company needs to send a quantity of goods that does not require a full vehicle.

This modality allows better adapting transport to the actual volume of the shipment and is a common solution for both national and international shipments.

Eurostat places consolidated goods, that is, different types of goods transported together, among the main categories of European road transport.

FTL or LTL: what to consider

Volume is important, but it is not the only criterion.

The amount of goods. A high volume may justify a full load, while for smaller shipments groupage may be more appropriate.

Deadlines. If the shipment has very specific needs, it is necessary to study which service better meets the schedule.

Origin and destination. The frequency of routes and available connections can determine which alternative is more efficient.

Characteristics of the load. Weight, dimensions, or nature of the goods also influence the solution.

For this reason, rather than always applying the same model, it is advisable to study each shipment.

A solution for every transport need

Agencia Nord offers full load (FTL) and groupage (LTL) services in national and international transport. It also provides parcel services and other transport options adapted to each customer’s needs.

The goal is not simply to find a vehicle, but to determine the most suitable way to get each shipment to its destination.

Freight transport, a key element for business competitiveness

Transport is much more than moving goods from one point to another. When a company needs to deliver a product to a customer, supply a factory, or send an order to another country, factors such as deadlines, safety, coordination, and responsiveness to any changes come into play.

Road transport continues to play a fundamental role in this movement of goods. According to the latest Eurostat data, road freight transport in the European Union reached 1,886 billion tonne-kilometers in 2025, 0.9% more than the previous year. Spain accounted for 14.5% of this volume and ranked among the main European countries in land freight transport.

When transport conditions customer service

For many companies, meeting a delivery date is directly part of the commitment made to their customer.

An incident in transport can affect a production line, a construction site, a retail establishment, or a final delivery. For this reason, when choosing a transport provider, it is not enough to just consider the price of the route.

It is also important to consider adaptability, communication, knowledge of routes, type of goods, or the possibility of seeking alternatives when an unforeseen event occurs.

Each shipment needs a different solution

Not all goods have the same needs.

Some companies need to send a full load, others share space through groupage services, and others require parcel or specific transport solutions.

This diversity makes it especially important to have different transport options and be able to choose the most suitable one according to volume, destination, deadlines, and characteristics of each shipment.

National and international transport

Companies’ needs do not end on the Peninsula either. The internationalization of markets means many companies need to regularly connect with customers and suppliers from other European countries.

International transport accounted for 24.4% of EU road freight transport in 2025.

In this context, having a contact person capable of coordinating different types of shipments greatly simplifies daily management.

Agencia Nord has over 70 years of experience in the sector and offers national and international transport services, with full load, groupage, and parcel solutions, adapting each operation to the customer’s needs.

Because behind every shipment there is also a deadline, a commitment, and a customer waiting for it.
